Frequently Asked Questions

Q - How do I enter a period (.) in an IP address when there is no period-key on the remote controller?

A - The remote control units that came with the older Viewstation units did not have a period-key. In this case the right-arrow key would be used to enter a period in the IP address. The new remote control units now have a period-key. The new remote controls will work with the older Viewstation units.

Q - Can I use Microsoft Netmeeting to videoconference with Polycom units?

A - Yes, provided the connection is with a direct link to/from the Polycom unit(s). If the conference is made through the UF Bridge, it will not work. Netmeeting only connects at 128 Kbps. The UF Bridge is not configured to support that speed.

Q - Will Microsoft NetMeeting videoconference with Polycom systems?

A - Yes. The video stream is compatible and can establish a direct video/audio link between the two systems.

Q - Does Microsoft NetMeeting work with the UF Bridge for videoconference calls?

A - No. The UF Bridge is configured to support video calls at 384 KB speeds. While speed matching is operational, the lowest speed supported in some conferences is about 192 KB. Netmeeting only communicates up to 128 KB. The use of Netmeeting video through the UF Bridge is not recommended or supported.

Q - Does Microsoft NetMeeting work with the UF Bridge for data conference calls?

A - Yes. With the video component turned off in NetMeeting it is possible to establish a data conference on the UF Bridge using the conference prefix of 7899.

Q - What is the operating system on the Polycom videoconference units?

A - The iPower units are PC based and run the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system. The Viewstation and VSX models use a real-time OS (RTOS) called  "pSOS" (provably Secure Operating System) from Wind River. More info about this embedded OS can be found at

http://www.windriver.com/

Q - Should the videoconference unit always be registered with the UF Gatekeeper?

A - Registration with the Gatekeeper provides authentication for connection and use of the campus UF Bridge. If registered, it can prevent point-to-point connectivity in the event that the Gatekeeper is unavailable for authentication. For now, only register with the Gatekeeper when you are using the UF Bridge for a meeting.

Q - What is the preferred connection speed for videoconferencing?

A - In general, the preferred speed is 384 KB. However, the maximum speed is limited by your network connectivity. It cannot exceed the limits (bandwidth) of the data line connecting to the Internet. In a multi-user environment you will be sharing the total bandwidth with other users. The maximum speed should be set to 384 or less (256 or 128) depending on your connectivity.

Q - Why does my VSX 7000 unit keep dropping connections when in a multipoint call?

A - All the VSX 7000 videoconference units contain a small MCU that allows up to three (3) simultaneous remote connections. Depending on model purchased, the MCU may or may not be licensed for continuous use. If not licensed it will maintain multiple connections for 5 minutes for testing and evaluation purposes. When the time limit is reached it will automatically drop the oldest 2nd or 3rd connection. A license can be purchased to  deactivate the time limit.

Q - Is there an easier way to enter IFAS videoconference sites into the address book directory rather than using the remote control keyboard feature?

A - Yes. A list of known IFAS sites can be easily downloaded into the local directory. Instructions are available elsewhere.

Q - Is it possible to empty the "Recent Calls" list?

A - If you have administrative access to the Polycom unit, it can be done through the network connection. To delete the list, FTP to the unit, delete the "localcdr.csv" file and restart the unit.

Q - Can I do an ad-hoc videoconference using the UF Bridge?

A - Yes. Instructions are available from the UF Academic technology web site.

Q - If I am in an ad-hoc videoconference using the UF Bridge will the conference continue until everyone disconnects?

A - In general, yes. However, if another registered conference needs your connection port your session will be terminated without warning. You can call the UF video center to ask if they can reconnect you to other available ports.

Q - How do I guarantee that my conference will not be terminated?

A - To guarantee availability you must pre-register with UF Video to reserve the number and type of ports you will need. There is a nominal charge for this service. "Multi-point high-profile conferences requiring dedicated bandwidth and scheduling will require a $5 per-event setup fee. " A service request form can be found at:
