Connecting PC
NetMeeting
to a Gatekeeper

Before participating in a videoconference call you must know if the call will be using a Gatekeeper to join all the participants. Normally you would not be connected to a Gatekeeper and would be directly accessible from anywhere on the Internet.

NOTE - the UF Radvision Gatekeeper/Bridge does not support video calls using Netmeeting. All UF Radvision video conferences are preset to use only 384 kbps. Netmeeting cannot exceed its maximum speed of 128 kbps. If a connection is attempted, a video image may be transmitted by Netmeeting, but no video will be received by Netmeeting. Polycom units may receive the Netmeeting video image.

The UF Radvision Gatekeeper/Bridge does support data calls using Netmeeting. A single conference (7899) has been set up exclusively for T.120 data connections (no video).

If the conference does not use a Gatekeeper the connecting address will be a normal IP address (i.e., 128.227.103.179). However, if a Gatekeeper is involved, you will need to know both the IP address of the Gatekeeper (i.e., 128.227.156.75 for UF) and also the specific conference number (i.e., 78991549) to be joined.

NetMeeting can be configured to use the specified Gatekeeper. Follow these steps through the on-screen menu:

  • Tools menu
    • Options menu
      • Advanced Calling

Use gatekeeper -    check box

Gatekeeper -    enter Gatekeeper IP address
 (i.e., 128.227.156.75 for UF)

Use account name -    uncheck the box

Use phone number -    check the box and enter
79 + last 5-digits of your phone number

When all entries have been made , click OK twice. You can verify that a successful connection was made to the gatekeeper by checking the small icon at the lower right corner of the NetMeeting window. At first there will be an hourglass icon when trying to log onto the gatekeeper. If not successful a pop-up window should state "Gatekeeper connect timed out". The icon will change to a network icon. If the icon is grayed out, there is no connection. It can also be checked by placing the cursor on the symbol and a text message will appear.

When the system is properly configured and connected to the gatekeeper, place your conference call to the number provided by the conference host (this will be a 7 digit number, NOT an IP address).

Hang up when completed by pressing the hang-up button on the main menu..

The PC NetMeeting software should be reset for normal IP Internet calling when the call is completed. This is done by returning to the "Gatekeeper" menu as detailed above and unchecking the "Use gatekeeper" option. The other settings do not need to be changed because they will be ignored until you again specify the use of a Gatekeeper. This will make the setup for your next visit to this or other Gatekeepers easier.
