Polycom PVX
Setup

The Polycom PVX software will usually operate satisfactorily after installation without any modifications to the configuration. However, it is possible to modify the settings at any time to correct connection problems and/or change how the system is configured.

To make changes, click on the setup icon found in the top left portion of the PVX screen. This wrench will allow you to adjust various features within the program.

The Setup screen displays 4 buttons at the bottom:

Restore factory settings (requires restart of PVX)

Accept all changes and exit setup screen

Reject all changes and exit setup screen

Accept all changes and remain in setup screen

General:

General tab - user information

  • User Name: enter the identifier you want displayed as part of a directory listing (ILS). This is not a Username used for logging onto a system.

  • Email: enter your e-mail address.

  • Select Language: click on the arrow to select the appropriate language of choice.

  • Always On Top: selecting this option may be bothersome if you will be showing your desktop since the PVX display may block portions of the desktop display. However, if you use a dual-monitor PC this may be convenient since the PVX display could be moved to the second monitor.
  • Auto Start in Background: this option is convenient if you do a lot of videoconferencing.

  • Device Preferences: unless you are using a Polycom ViaVideo camera, select the "Never Use" option.

General:

Call Settings - convenience features

  • Auto-Answer: this option is generally not recommended for privacy reasons since the video camera becomes active when an incoming call is received. If not checked you will be prompted when an incoming call is received. Camera will only be turned on after you accept the call.

  • Mute Auto-Answer: if auto-answer video is selected it is highly recommended this option is selected for privacy reasons so microphone is muted until local user decides to activate the microphone.

  • Maximum Time in Call: it is best to enter some reasonable time limit to ensure connection is terminated if accidentally forgotten.

  • AES Encryption: unless there is a need for encrypting the transmission, select "Off".

  • Call Forwarding: if incoming videoconference calls will not be accepted on the PC, select the appropriate option(s) and enter the IP address of the videoconference unit that should receive the forwarded call.

General:

Performance - allocate resources to the preferred function on the PC

  • PC Configuration: the PVX program will try to detect and display the type and speed of the local PC processor. If nothing or incorrect info is displayed, check the box and select the closest match from the pull-down menu.

  • Allocate Resources: select your preference for application priority. If your primary use is to be showing your desktop, select "Other Applications". If primary use during videoconference is the audio/video, select "Polycom PVX". Otherwise, "Balanced" provides equal priority to both desktop applications and the videoconference.

  • VideoMail Quality: The options are "Good", "Better" or "Best".  As quality is increased, so is the size of the attached video file. Select the option that provides an acceptable video quality without creating too large of a file size.

Video:

Video Sources - camera selection and video protocols activated

  • Preferred Camera: if one or more video cameras are connected to the PC it is important to identify the specific camera to be used. Select the appropriate camera from the pull-down menu. If no camera is available, select "None".

  • Send Image: if no camera is available (i.e., broken) or selected ("None") it is still possible to send a fixed image by selecting a graphic image located on the PC. The image can be either a BMP, JPG or JPEG image format. (This does not work with all remote systems)

  • Video Protocols:

    • People+Content: enable - used to show desktop content to remote sites

    • H.239 Content: disable - currently not supported on UF Radvision Bridge

    • H.264 Enhanced Video: enable - better quality video over slower speed connections

Video:

Display - activate video display functions

  • DirectX: activate to take advantage of system video acceleration

  • Full Screen: activate

Video:

Advanced - additional video quality selections

  • VGA Encoding: optional - enable if larger video display area is desired at startup. Image can also be manually increased.

    • Video Quality: select preference for smoother or sharper

    • VGA 30 fps: enable

  • Camera Load on CPU: select low, medium or high

Audio:

Audio Device Settings

  • Output: select "Auto" as first choice or select other option from pull-down menu if speakers or headphone do not work.

  • Input: select "Auto" as first choice or select other option from pull-down menu if microphone do not work.

  • Calibrate Microphone: click on button to display tuning menu (see below)

  • Echo Cancellation: select appropriate option for audio equipment being used

  • Automatic Gain: enable

Data:

  • T.120 Data Sharing: enable for showing desktop applications

  • Remote Share: enable to share desktop application

  • Netmeeting Data: enable to accept connection

Directory:

  • Internet Locator Server: IFAS supports an ILS. By registering with the ILS you will be able to see in your directory a list of all other videoconference sites that are available and registered on the same  ILS server. Enter the IP address (ils.ifas.ufl.edu) including the port number (1002) separated by a colon. Check the "Register" box and the "Status" should show "Registered" if the server is available and the IP and port number were entered correctly.

  • Global Directory Server: GDS servers are not available for IFAS use. Remove any GDS entries and/or uncheck the "Register" box.

  • H.323.Extension: enable - required for use with the UF Radvision gatekeeper.

  • ISDN registration: disable - ISDN telephone support is not available.

Network:

Connection

  • Choose connection type - select the type of connection used by your PC. If unsure, call the IFAS Help Desk.

  • Network adapter - check the Windows default adapter unless another adapter is being used.

Network:

Ports - use the port range from 3230-3237.

Network:

QoS - no entry required. Quality of Service (QoS) is not supported to the desktop.

Network:

Bandwidth

  • Default - select 384 KB unless available upload speed is less. Cable and DSL connections may have speeds of 1.5 MB or more download but may only have a 256 KB upload speed (asymmetric). In this case, select 256 as the default unless the connection line is shared with others at your site. When network connections are shared, select a default speed that is lower than the max upload speed to allow others network access.

  • Maximum - in general, set to same value as the default value used unless excess network bandwidth is available (i.e., on campus).

  • Asymmetric - if cable or DSL connection, check the box. Enter the maximum upload speed of the connection.

  • Dynamic - check the box

Speeds: check up to 6 call speeds between 128 and the maximum transmit bandwidth available on the local network connection.

H.323:

  • Gatekeeper - select "Off" unless connecting to a Gatekeeper for multi-site conference. Gatekeeper setup instructions are available elsewhere.

  • Name - will display name as previously entered on General Setup screen.

  • Extension -  enter "79" + the last 5 digits of your local room phone number (i.e., 7924636 for 392-4636). This number must be unique from all other users on the Gatekeeper.

  • PathNavigator - unchecked, not available.

SIP - uncheck, not used or available at this time.

GMS - uncheck, Global Management System is not used or available at this time.

Stats: Call Statistics - when a videoconference is in progress this page will display the connection speed, connection quality and time for the video and audio components of the call. If AES encryption is enabled, the transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) speeds will also be displayed

Stats: Media Statistics - when a videoconference is in progress this page will display specific details about the connection speed and quality for both the transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) stats for both the video/audio and the data parts of the connection.

Locks: Page Access - each setup feature can be individually locked to prevent modification without the use of a password. This is useful on PC systems that are used by multiple users. On single user systems this feature is of little value unless you want to prevent accidental modification of the setup parameters.
