Polycom VSX
Configuration

The Polycom VSX videoconference unit has an extensive setup menu to personalize and configure the operation of the system. When the system is first powered on it will assume a generic configuration that will usually provide the basic functionality. The system may need to be reconfigured to work in your local environment.

This section is provided to help you find and navigate through the many setup menus available that are needed to configure the system. The number of menu options and setting all the values may be a daunting task but only needs to be done once during the initial configuration process to ensure all settings are correct. After that, no settings need to be changed except for the occasional connect or disconnect from a Gatekeeper, if needed for a specific call.

The primary device for control of the VSX system is the remote control unit. It provides direct access to the internal settings of the system through the on-screen menus. Each menu works in a circular fashion. Either the up or down arrow will move the cursor to an available setting. The left and right arrows are used for horizontal movement. The central button is for selecting a menu item to manipulate. The bent arrow in the lower right will back up one menu screen and the house button in the lower left will return to the main menu.

To follow the path through the menu system, use the arrow keys to select an item on the display screen and press the center button to advance to the next layer of menus. When an option is displayed that needs to be changed use the arrow keys to move to the option and press the center key to select or change a setting. In some cases the item may provide a menu of options for selection. Use the arrows to move to the desired option and press the center button.

In other cases you may be required to enter alphanumeric text. This can be done in two different ways. The numeric keys can be used to enter either numbers or letters. By pressing any of the numeric keys it will enter the selected number. However, if a key is pressed in rapid succession it will rotate through all the possible letters and number displayed on the key. If the same number or letter is to be repeated, pause for a second and repeat the process.

The second option is to use the keyboard that can be displayed on the screen by pressing the keyboard button on the upper left of the numeric keypad. If this option is selected, the arrow keys are used to move the cursor to the desired key and the central button used to select the key. When the entry is completed the keyboard can be removed by pressing the key that activated the keyboard display or selecting the bent arrow key on the lower right of the keyboard.

Like the other Polycom units, the VSX model can support both Internet (IP) and telephone (ISDN) connectivity if these features have been purchased. IFAS only supports IP connectivity. Consequently, only the IP configuration will be addressed in this document. To distinguish the different setups that are important for IP connectivity, the following markup will be used to help find the appropriate settings:

bullet Required IP features will be colored RED and labeled with the symbol.
Every setting should be checked for validity and user preference.

bullet Optional IP features will be colored ORANGE and labeled with the symbol.
In general, these settings are for testing and general setup.

bullet Non-supported features will be colored GREY and labeled with the symbol.
These settings can be safely ignored.

bullet Information only items will be BOLDED and labeled with the symbol.
Provides read only information about the current operation of system.

bullet Suggested/Recommended answers are BOLDED and UNDERLINED

This outline will be helpful to find features that need to be initially set or may need to be changed at a later time. It will help by showing the menu path required to get to a specific setup function. This menu structure is for Software Version Release 7.5.1 - 11 Jan  2005.
